This is the storm version of a rain mix: heavy rain out front, thunder well behind it, and a wind that keeps the whole thing moving. Rain is mostly hiss, so it softens the sounds at the pitch of voices and above, like a TV through the wall, a door, or someone moving around the kitchen. A truck or a boiler is a deep rumble and will still get through. Thunder is the part worth thinking about, because it arrives as sudden events rather than running steadily. Listen through a few rumbles before you set a timer
Stay awake through several rumbles before you trust this one overnight. If a rumble makes you open your eyes, turn the thunder down by ten or fifteen points, or switch it off; do not raise the rain to bury it, because that only makes the whole room louder. The wind should read as shape around the rain instead of a gust of its own. Keep the level low enough that you would still hear your alarm, a smoke detector or a child in the next room, and keep the phone off the pillow rather than under it.
