Why this one starts so quiet

A door closing, a floorboard, the dishwasher finishing: sudden sounds in a quiet house are what most parents are trying to smooth over, and that is the job here. Pink noise is a soft hiss that stays the same, and the rain sits well below it so there is a little variation without much to listen to. The slider positions only describe the two sounds against each other. How loud it is in the room comes from your phone or speaker, the distance, and the walls, and that part is yours to set and to check.

Where to put the speaker, and how loud

Keep the speaker well away from the crib, and never put a device, a cable or anything loose in the sleep space. Start at your device's lowest volume and listen from where the baby lies, not from beside the speaker, because those two spots are very different. Follow the current advice from your pediatrician or your local health service on infant sleep, since this page is not childcare or medical guidance. Sound does not replace feeding, soothing or a properly set up crib, and if the baby seems unsettled or the room sounds loud to you, turn it off rather than turning it up.

Small changes only

If the rain is distinct enough to notice, take it down to about 15 and keep the hiss smooth underneath. If the pink noise seems strong, lower the master volume before you change the balance between the two. Do not move the speaker closer to get more detail out of it. The timer will stop the sound after 15, 30 or 60 minutes if you only want it while the baby settles, and it is worth stepping back into the room a few minutes later, since a level sounds different from the doorway. Once something works, leave it there.
