Enchanted
Enchanted is the brightest pad here: a cluster of notes around F, A and D, each one doubled slightly out of tune with itself, so the whole thing shimmers about once a second. There's no bass under it at all. It suits you if you want something light and glassy instead of a low drone.
Ready to play
Put this under rain or a fire, keep the blend you end up with, and play it through the night with your screen off. The Slo app does that on iOS, Android and Mac.
What the loop actually contains
The notes sit in a tight cluster around F, A and D, and each one turns up two or three times over, each copy a hair away from the others in pitch. Those near-copies beat slowly against one another, about once a second, and that slow beating is the shimmer you hear. Underneath there's nothing at all: the bottom end is empty, and each ear gets some of the least matched material on the site.
How it compares and what to pair it with
Every other ambient loop in this group is built downwards from a low note. This one is built upwards from the middle of the keyboard, which is why it sounds glassy instead of heavy. Moonlight Lullaby occupies a similar register but plays an actual melody, and Tropical Palms is warmer and less detuned. Browse the rest from the sound library index.
Since it leaves the bottom end entirely free, it stacks well over something deep. The Enchanted and brown noise blend in the free sound mixer fills in the low end the pad does not have.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Enchanted shimmer?
Each note appears two or three times over, very slightly out of tune with itself. Those near-copies beat against one another about once a second, and you hear that as shimmer.
Does it have any bass?
Almost none. The bottom end is effectively empty, so nothing rumbles under the shimmer.
Which notes does it use?
F, A and D, which add up to a D minor chord, though what plays is one held cluster and not a progression.
Will small speakers reproduce it?
Better than most pads here. There's no deep bass in it to lose, so a phone or a small speaker gives you nearly all of it.
