Flow

Flow is one note, A, stacked in three octaves with a fifth added, sitting under a soft hissy wash that gives it more top end than the other pads here. It spreads wide and it holds steady. The name describes the shape of the sound, not a state it puts you in.

Ready to play

Put this under rain or a fire, keep the blend you end up with, and play it through the night with your screen off. The Slo app does that on iOS, Android and Mac.

What the loop actually contains

The pitch content is unusually plain: three octaves of A, with a single E above the lowest one and faint traces further up. There are no thirds and no chord, only octaves and a fifth, which is why it sounds like one long note instead of harmony. Over the top sits a soft wash of hiss, brighter here than in any of the other pads on the site, and that hiss is what keeps it from feeling airless.

A note on the name, and what to pair it with

This page describes a recording. It does not claim the track produces a mental state, and nothing on this site supports that. What is true is narrower and more useful: it is unchanging, wordless, has no rhythm, and holds one pitch class throughout, so there is very little in it to attract attention.

For the same depth without the wash, try Celestial Visions; for a fuller chord, Deep Focus; and for a pitchless equivalent, brown noise. The sound library index lists everything. To thicken the wash, open the Flow and river blend in the free sound mixer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Flow put you into a flow state?

Nothing supports a claim of that kind, and this page does not make one. The title labels a track; it does not describe an effect.

Which note does it use?

A, in three octaves, with a fifth sitting above the lowest one.

Why does it sound less hollow than other drones?

It carries a soft wash of hiss above the notes, brighter than anything the other ambient pads here have on top.

Can I use it with the sleep timer?

Yes. Stop after 15, 30 or 60 minutes, choose all night, or leave the timer off.
