Waves have holes in them

Ocean is not continuous. It swells and it recedes, and in the trough between two swells the room goes quiet again. Awake, that movement is the appeal. Asleep, every trough is a window for the sound that woke you last night.

Pink noise at 20% sits in those troughs. It is a steady bed, 53% of its power below 250 Hz and the rest spread evenly, quiet enough that you notice the waves and not the noise. Between the two layers the floor never drops.

The mistake: treating waves as a sleep sound because they are calming

Calm and steady are different properties. A wave recording is calming to listen to and unsteady as masking, and the two get confused because both feel restful in the first ten minutes. What matters overnight is whether the background ever disappears.

Test it awake. Play the preset, sit still, and listen for the quietest moment between swells. If you can hear the fridge in that gap, the fridge will still be there at four in the morning. Raise pink noise, not the waves.

Why this one runs to morning

A wave loop that stops mid-night removes an unsteady sound, which is a bigger change than removing a steady one. That change is what wakes people. So the timer is set to all night rather than 45 minutes, and the mix is quiet enough to run that long.

  • Ocean Waves loop join: the step between the loop’s last sample and its first measures 0.21× that file’s own 99.9th-percentile sample-to-sample move — inside the material, so a butt-join would not tick. The player overlaps each pass by 20 ms regardless.

Frequently asked questions

Are ocean sounds good for sleeping through noise?

On their own, not reliably. Waves rise and fall, and each trough lets the room back in. Paired with a steady layer they work better, which is why this preset holds pink noise at 20% underneath.

Why pink noise rather than brown?

Ocean already carries weight low down. Pink noise spreads more evenly, so it fills the troughs without making the mix feel heavy. Brown noise under waves tends to read as a rumble.

How long is the wave loop?

32.02 seconds, overlapped by 20 milliseconds at each join. That overlap is picked per file by sweeping for the length that keeps the level flat across the transition.

Will waves wake a light sleeper?

They can. A single loud swell is a change, and change is what causes brief arousals. If that describes you, lower ocean toward 40% and let pink noise carry more of the mix.

Does the timer fade or cut?

It fades. The player ramps down over the last third of a second rather than stopping dead, so the end of the timer is not itself an event.
