Wolves Howling

Wolves Howling is a set of long calls carrying across a wild night landscape. Each howl rises, holds and fades, and then another voice may answer from somewhere further off, so what you get is distance and feeling rather than steady cover. Keep the pack out on the horizon for stories, games, meditation or a night scene, and set the timer to close the scene for you.

Put this under rain or a fire, keep the blend you end up with, and play it through the night with your screen off. The Slo app does that on iOS, Android and Mac.

Long calls designed to cross wild distance

Wolves howl to keep in contact, to gather the pack, and to say they're there, and a long held call carries much farther across country than a short one. When a second wolf answers, you can hear roughly how far apart they are. The slow rise, the wobble in the middle and the long fade are what make a howl sound mournful to us, even though the wolf is only passing on information. Against an owl's hoot, a howl lasts far longer, and two or three of them can overlap into a chorus.

Wild-night character rather than cover

Howling suits fantasy, wilderness writing, tabletop games, and any meditation where a sense of distance is welcome. It won't cover other noise, and every call starts sharply enough to catch your attention or feel a little unsettling, so it works better as atmosphere than as something to sleep through. If you do want it at bedtime, keep it very quiet over something steady and set a short timer. Nobody can promise it will calm you, and it treats nothing.

Keep the pack on the horizon

A quiet speaker keeps the animals where they belong, out in the dark; loud headphones drag them into the room with you. In the sound mixer, put the odd howl over Mellow Wind or quiet night crickets. The mixing guide covers how to leave room for a sound that comes and goes. Keep the level low enough that you can still hear your alarms.

Frequently asked questions

Why do wolves howl?

They use long calls for pack contact, gathering, and territorial presence across distance.

Are the howls continuous?

No. You hear long calls and the occasional reply, with quiet in between.

Are wolf sounds good for sleep?

They work better as atmosphere than as something to sleep through, because a single call can wake a light sleeper.

What should I mix with wolves?

Low wind or quiet night insects create distance while the howls remain occasional.
