Why the timer is the point of this preset
Every other setting here is adjustable and none of them matters as much as the 90 minutes. A study block needs an end, and a sound that stops is a cheap way to get one that does not involve looking at a clock.
Ninety minutes is long enough for a real piece of work and short enough that you notice it finishing. When the sound fades you have a decision to make, which is the whole mechanism.
The mistake: studying at sleep volume
The sleep preset for this same sound sits at 50%. This one is 45%, and the difference is not about comfort — it is that reading is a verbal task, and anything that competes with inner speech costs you comprehension.
Brown noise has almost nothing above 4 kHz, which is why it competes less than most sounds. But quiet still beats loud for dense material. If you find yourself rereading a paragraph, drop the noise before you blame the book.
What the rain layer is for
Ambient rain at 20% adds a small amount of variation on top of a completely static base. Some people find pure brown noise deadening over an hour; a little movement stops the mix feeling like a switched-on appliance.
It is optional in a way the brown noise is not. Pull it to zero if you are memorising something, where anything with texture in it is a liability.
The two layers, measured
Measured on 2026-09-04: the ambient rain loop decoded to 48 kHz mono from the shipped file, brown noise rendered from the browser's own generator, both through the EBU R128 meter and an averaged 8192-point FFT.
| Layer | Preset level | Loop | Loudness | RMS | Centre | Low / mid / high |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brown Noise | 45% | generated, no loop | -15.5 LUFS | -13.9 dBFS | 537 Hz | 65.9% / 31.7% / 2.3% |
| Ambient Rain | 20% | 16.9 s | -15.8 LUFS | -18.4 dBFS | 2335 Hz | 56.7% / 16% / 27.3% |
- Ambient Rain loop join: the step between the loop’s last sample and its first measures 0.11× that file’s own 99.9th-percentile sample-to-sample move — inside the material, so a butt-join would not tick. The player overlaps each pass by 36 ms regardless.
- What this preset cannot do: Nothing here shows brown noise improves study performance. A 2024 review found small average benefits from white or pink noise for young people with ADHD or elevated attention problems, and a small average harm for everyone else. Compare a block with it against a block without it.
Play brown noise for studying
- Open this page in any browser.
- The preset is already applied: brown noise at 45%, ambient rain at 20%, timer at 90 minutes.
- Press play, start the work, and do not adjust anything for the first ten minutes.
- When the timer fades the sound out, stop and decide whether to start another block.
Frequently asked questions
Is brown noise good for studying?
It masks room noise without adding words or melody, which is the useful part. The evidence for a direct performance gain is thin: a 2024 meta-analysis found small average benefits for young people with elevated attention problems and small average harms for those without.
How loud should study noise be?
Lower than you would set it for sleep. This preset starts at 45% against 50% for the sleep version, because reading competes with sound for the same verbal processing.
Why 90 minutes?
To give the block an end you do not have to watch for. The sound fading out is the cue to stop, stretch, or decide to keep going.
Should I add rain or keep it plain?
Add it if a static sound feels deadening after half an hour. Remove it for memorisation, where texture in the background is a distraction rather than a relief.
Does this work for exams and revision?
It works the same way as for any reading. One caution: if you always revise with sound and sit the exam in silence, the rooms will not match. Test both.
