A different job from noise
Every noise colour on this site is built to be ignored. This preset is built to be a place. People who study better in a library or a coffee shop are not being masked into concentration — they are borrowing other people's work as a reason to keep going.
That is why the keyboard layer is here. Cafe ambience alone measures a spectral centre of 523 Hz with 71% of its power in the speech range: voices, cups, movement. Typing at 936 Hz adds the specific sound of somebody else doing the thing you are meant to be doing.
The mistake: using this for anything verbal
Cafe ambience contains speech. Not words you can follow, but speech-shaped sound, and speech-shaped sound competes with reading and writing more reliably than any other background. A 2023 experiment found lyrics impaired verbal memory, visual memory and reading comprehension — and conversation is closer to lyrics than it is to rain.
Use this for problem sets, note cleanup, code, spreadsheets, diagrams. Switch to brown noise for dense reading. That single swap is worth more than any adjustment on this page.
How to keep it from taking over
Forty-five per cent is chosen so the room sits behind you rather than around you. Above about 60% the cafe stops being a place and becomes a group of people you can nearly understand, which is the worst possible state.
If you catch yourself listening for a particular voice, you are too loud. Drop ten points rather than switching it off.
What the room is made of
Measured on 2026-09-04 from the two shipped loops, decoded to 48 kHz mono, loudness from the EBU R128 meter and the spectrum from an averaged 8192-point FFT.

- What this preset cannot do: Neither loop is a real cafe and neither has a person in it who says anything. What this reproduces is the shape of a busy room, which is not the same as being in one.

Frequently asked questions
Does background noise help you study?
It depends entirely on the task. Room ambience suits problem sets, admin and coding. For reading and memorisation it works against you, because speech-shaped sound competes with verbal processing.
Why is there typing in the mix?
Because the useful part of a library is other people working. The typing layer at 20% supplies that without the conversation a cafe brings with it.
How loud should cafe sounds be?
Quiet enough that no single voice stands out. This preset starts at 45%. Past about 60% you begin trying to follow conversations, which is the opposite of what you came for.
How long are the loops?
Both run 32.02 seconds. The player overlaps each pass by 182 ms for the cafe and 148 ms for the typing, so neither join is audible.
Is this better than actually going to a cafe?
It is cheaper and it has no queue. It also has no other people, which is the part that makes a real cafe work for some people and not for others.
