Cafe

Cafe is a busy indoor room: voices blurred well below the point where you could follow words, with cups, spoons and machinery clattering several times a second. It's the brightest and busiest of the three crowd recordings here. It suits anyone who wants company in the room instead of quiet.

Ready to play

Put this under rain or a fire, keep the blend you end up with, and play it through the night with your screen off. The Slo app does that on iOS, Android and Mac.

What the recording actually contains

Cups, cutlery and the short hiss of a machine clatter several times a second, about twice as often as in the Restaurant recording, and every hit lands harder and brighter. That is what you hear as the difference between the two. Voices run all the way through, always too far down to make out words, and they rise and fall with the room; there is never a conversation you could follow. The room spreads out around you, so nothing sits in one spot.

Choosing between the three crowd recordings

These three are genuinely different scenes, not renamed copies of one recording. This one is the brightest and busiest. Restaurant is warmer, mostly a low room rumble, with half as much clatter. Summer Evening Chatter is outdoors, a wider scene with insects going the whole time and almost no crockery. Compare all three from the sound library index.

Cafe recordings are eventful by nature, so a steadier layer underneath can even them out. Open the Cafe and brown noise blend in the free sound mixer and set each layer to its own level.

Presets built on cafe

Each one opens with the volumes and the timer already set for a single job, so you can press play and leave it alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make out what people are saying?

No. The voices are always there, but they stay too low and too blurred to make out words.

How is it different from the Restaurant track?

This one is brighter and about twice as busy, with roughly twice as much clatter from cups and cutlery and a harder edge on every hit.

Is there music in the recording?

There is no music in it. You hear the room, the voices and the clatter of cups and cutlery.

Does it keep playing on its own?

Yes. It runs continuously until you stop it or the sleep timer does.
