Restaurant

Restaurant is the warmer and heavier of the two indoor crowd recordings. What you mostly hear is the low rumble of a full room, with about four crockery and cutlery hits a second where the cafe recording has eight. You can tell people are talking, but you can't make out a word. It suits anyone who wants a fuller, less clattery room.

Put this under rain or a fire, keep the blend you end up with, and play it through the night with your screen off. The Slo app does that on iOS, Android and Mac.

What the recording actually contains

The loudest thing in it is the low rumble of a room full of bodies, furniture and low voices. Above that it falls away faster than the Cafe recording does, so hard surfaces land as thuds and dull chinks instead of bright rings. Cutlery and crockery hits come at roughly four a second, about half the cafe rate, and the room sounds a little wider than the cafe does.

Choosing between the three crowd recordings

Cafe is the bright, busy one; this is the warm, dense one; and Summer Evening Chatter is outdoors, wider, and carries insects rather than cutlery. All three are separate recordings, and they sound clearly different from each other. The sound library index lists everything on the site.

If the deep rumble is more than you want, put something brighter over the top. The Restaurant and rain blend in the free sound mixer adds a fine hiss without adding more voices.

Frequently asked questions

Can you hear separate conversations?

No. The voices stay blurred, so you can't follow any words or pick out a conversation.

How is it different from the Cafe track?

It is warmer and calmer: more of the low rumble of the room, much less bright clatter over the top, and about half as many clatter hits.

Why does it sound heavier on good speakers?

Most of it is low rumble, which small speakers barely reproduce and larger ones give you in full.

Is there a sleep timer?

Yes. You can stop it after 15, 30 or 60 minutes, let it run all night, or leave the timer off.
